3D Printed Chess Set: Preliminary Models

Here is a Chess Set that I designed. This is my original sketches for this project. During the brainstorming, I had the idea of using cactus. My cactus designs are some of them rounded, some of them are angled. I received feedback that all in angular form would be better to represent the concept of a set. So, I tried to make the angular form of the cactus. I have seen many models using the same method as the one shown above. Through the Rhino program, I thought I could apply it to my design. Here is a progress snapshot. Use Loft command to create a common cactus shape, and then use mesh command to give angular shape. And then, did Mesh to Nurb command to get a surface. Next, when you have drawn all the lines through contour command, you can give it surface with ExtrudeCrv. Under the theme of cactus, I tried to represent the hierarchy of chess set by the size and form of cactus. I'm cannot wait to see my real models!

Outsourced Wearable Object

Here is my original 6 rings design. I really want to make industrial quality design. I focused on making lines that were comfortable and soft to wear. I chose these three designs and took them to the last class. We did group critique, they said simple and soft lines were good, but the design was not unique. To further develop the design, a twist in one ring was inserted repeatedly. Here is my final wearable ring design. And then, I uploaded to Shapeways. I check the small two red dots. I guess it is not a big problem.

Reverse Engineered Coffee Maker: HD Render and Exploded View

The one with blue is a photo of the actual coffee cold brewer. Last few weeks, I reverse engineered this object with Rhino program. I finished this project. Here are my render and exploded views. I spent the whole day for rendering. First time that I rendered glass material, it was not realistic. Because a glass itself is transparent and highly reflective, making it difficult to represent the texture. Also, the ground plane looked fake. So, I tried again and aging to make it seem real. Finally, I got the photo realistic glass texture. My tip is to use "the index of refraction". The index of refraction is pre-set when you select glass from the material library, but I adjust the refractive index to achieve more realistic result. The most difficult thing that I struggled in this project was the pink parts. Because of the flexible quality of these rubber, the boundaries of where they fit into the glass are not clear.
